What in your opinion is the best nutrient to help with sugar addictions? Even when I am eating an all raw diet, I tend to gravitate to the fruits more than anything? In general I am not addicted to anything else but LOVE, knowledge and sugar! The former two are alright with me, but the sugar will kill me......

Re: sugar
Sun, February 6, 2005 - 2:57 PMHi nina, i believe that sugar addictions are coming from blood sugar fluctuations that cause certain feeling in our body. a way to help get out of this pattern, is to slow down the rate of absorbtion of the sugars you eat. Nopales cactus is great for this, with its muscilaginous effect and nutrient profile that really tonifies the pancreas, supporting you own pancreases natural abilty to regulate the amount of insulin it sends into the blood stream. Of cours just simply regulating yourself with hardfast determination is really a good way. I always ask my self why i am eating too much at a time when i notice that i am. what inner feelings am i trying to hide from by looking to a sugar rush, or other food related adictiions. Stevia, ia sweet power from a plant that we can eat to help our body lower the sugar cravings, it in itself is very sweet, but has zero glycemic activity, and also is good for pancreas. Our brain uses mostly sugar to fuel itsself, where our body uses outher things. Allot of brain activity can possibly cause cravings, and it wants a little quiick fruit sugar, but not allot, and doesn't need the high glycemic fruits, like bananas and mangoes and other super sweet fruits. apples are much more balanced for your body and so are other fruits, A quick intternet search shound give a list of fruits and thier glycemic indexes, the higher the index, the more insulin your body produces, the more cracked out on sugars humans tend to get, and the closer to diabetees people get.
I havn't eatin a piece of fruit now for a few months. All my sugar cravings are gone. I'm actually doing a zero glycemic index food expierement, You can learn about this at gabriel cousens center websit, the tree of life rejuvenation center. Cheers!

Re: sugar
Wed, February 9, 2005 - 10:04 AMAlso Nina you might want to try upping your intake of calcium as it definetly reduces sugar cravings. Make yourself fresh sesame
milk or wheatgrass juice on a regular basis, also spirulina works well to reduce sugar cravings.
Not sure what your situation is but I'm pretty much on an all raw diet and if I have intense sugar cravings sometimes I eat a date or two and that usually does the trick.
Good luck!

Re: sugar
Tue, May 23, 2006 - 9:48 PMI've been drinking a strong Gynostemma tea lately (about 3 tea bags in an 8 ounce glass of water for 15 minutes). I've noticed my cravings for sugar and coffee have decreased dramatically. It's also supposed to be really good for you. Plus it tastes good. Really, it's hard to go wrong with this stuff. -

Re: sugar
Wed, May 24, 2006 - 10:07 AMstevia.
stevia is a green plant with small leaves. the leaves are often dried and then crushed into a powder form. the powder is an excellent substitute to sugar.
stevia can rebalance the blood sugar levels within the human body.
stevia is potent....so a little bit goes a long way.

Re: sugar
Sun, August 6, 2006 - 7:25 AMThanks for that information on Stevia regulating blood sugar levels, that's great to know as I have tendencies towards low blood sugar where my husband has tendencies towards high, in addition although I use Splenda (his primary sweetner) occassionally I'm proned to Migraines in which even a small amount of Splenda can set off at times. If you're using Splenda and you're having headaches, try not using it for awhile to confirm that is the cause and seek additional dietary/medicall attention if it continues as it could be something more serious.
A few years ago we learned of Stevia and bought some of the liquid, recently I've found the packets of powdered Stevia and I have to say it's definitely better and goes a long away as bout a 1/2 packet works for an entire glass of tea whereas other sweetners I generally use two or three so if you're not originally from the South and don't like your tea even that Sweet then you'll find Stevia a great bargain as well as good for your health - that's a hard one to find sometimes - anyway Kudos to the powder, the liquid is a bit strong and seems to make the tea taste quite different as well. If there isn't anything available other than Splenda I'll often use the Raw sugar packets but generally I feel like it just doesn't work to sweeten tea. I've heard of poeple making up sugar syrup which sweetens better first but that's not usually available in rest.
One thing everyone should avoid however is Aspertame as much as possible in any form and/or in any product . After a recent study on Aspertame and Alzheimers, a lot of companies have recently been replacing the Aspertame with Splenda which at least made from real sugar.
Just some experience and thoughts in reply - love to hear more people may know about the dangers of both Aspertame and Splenda if any - Thanx.

Re: sugar
Sun, October 14, 2007 - 2:48 PMAspartame is poison, literally. Splenda I haven't done much research on, I just avoid these chemicals altogether.
At 86F, Aspartame begins degrading into formic acid (formaldehyde) and methanol (wood alcohol). And scientific evidence shows that it's a neuroinhibitor. Meaning, it interrupts the brain's function. And don't even get me started on Reagan, the FDA, Rumsfeld and Ashcroft - yes, these guys had a hand in pushing through FDA approval of Aspartame without clinical trials. Years ago when I worked in research (90's), Searle (the company behind Nutrasweet) was my client and I pulled independent research docs on nutrasweet from all over the world. Needless to say, none of them were good.
If you google 'aspartame toxicity' you'll find a wealth of information.

Sun, August 6, 2006 - 3:13 PM"Even when I am eating an all raw diet, I tend to gravitate to the fruits more than anything?"
maybe because thats what your body needs?
there seems to be very different schools of thought on this -- but some people claim after you have cleaned your system out, that fruit is overall better for you then veges. easier to absorb the nutrients, etc. i think this is assuming that you are eating a raw or mostly raw diet, and you aren't eating that much.
(please dont flame me for saying this, i'm still learning...) -

Re: sugar
Thu, August 10, 2006 - 11:57 AMI totally believe in eating intuitively. If your body is telling you that it wants more fruit then by all means give it fruit. I was able to beat my sugar cravings by eating high raw. Nothing dehydrated, no nuts or oils just about 70-80% fruit and 20-30% veggies. Very very occassionally I will use a bit of raw agave for a sweetener (in my green super soup). From what I understand Stevia doesn't have too great long term affects and usually isn't raw whereas agave is. Plus, with agave there is no sugar rush/crash.
Just my 2 cents...
With much love,
Missa -

Re: sugar
Mon, August 14, 2006 - 5:15 PMI agree with Missa on the raw agave. Its very light but it still gives a mellow sweetness that doesn't leave an aftertaste like honey. Eating fresh, whole fruit is the best way to satisfy those cravings. Fortunately I've never had issues with sugar. I've always been big on greens.
love and respect,
edwin

Wed, October 25, 2006 - 4:52 PMI suggest checking out David Wolf's 'Sunfood Diet Success System'. This book has really thorough info on how to properly combine foods when eating raw. He emphasises (and I agree) balancing dark green leafies with fruits and fats. You need it all.
Yay!

Re: sugar
Tue, April 3, 2007 - 9:45 PMBut what about enjoying an occasional bowl of ice cream with chocolate topping? I don't want to totally give that up, but I want a healthy body. Yeah... I am whining right now. I'm in the denial mode "No..No.. I won't give it up". I feel like a stubborn kid with my chocolate / ice cream sometimes. It's really the only sweet I LOVE other than raw honey.
I've never had Stevia before, does it taste like sugar or does it have a different "sweet" taste to it?

Re: sugar
Tue, April 10, 2007 - 6:16 PMFood is one of our tools to self realization, our true health comes from accepting fully of the self, so if ice cream makes you feel like a kid and that is a craving state a limitation then getting into those feelings and accepting yourself as that child will move you twords being able to be neutral to the ice cream, once that happens the ice cream is no longer healthy or unhealthy. Yet eating tons of ice cream will clog you up, eating a little while eating lots of other great vibrant foods is being real, and healthy and balanced.
I wish you fun with food

Wed, April 11, 2007 - 11:08 AMThanks Joaquin, an important insight into living in the real world while trying to abolish our addictions. Why not allow ourselves to indulge a little while filling up on food that truly nourishes. Why must we be so hard on ourselves?

Re: sugar
Thu, April 26, 2007 - 11:18 PMi have fought sugar as my only addiction for years. on again off again. on my off times i used a non-alcoholic tincture of skullcap. it is good for withdrawals/cravings, aids digestion, and is a mild sedative. though i do agree with the person who said you should perhaps listen to this craving, but listen closely and offer other alternatives. i find i crave certain foods when i need certain vitamins/nutrients. for instance if i am feeling anemic i crave red sauce from my cast iron pan. you're body and brain have made connections about foods and what they provide.
if you're craving a straight up sugary item- read doughnut, try the skullcap. if you want a banana, eat one- they are loaded with so many things that you need, and it's a harder sugar to break down in the body than the white stuff.
good luck!

Fri, July 13, 2007 - 4:43 PMWell, I see this thread originated in 2005 (i'm new to tribe), but I couldn't resist adding my two sense... Black Strap Molasses. In coffee, if you drink it, hot or iced; in tea, also hot or iced; over ice cream; or for a healthy treat - blended with soy milk or cream, tahini, raw cocoa nibs, vanilla and ice!! yummy. And soo healthy... I have a sweet tooth to and BSM has become a much healthier addiction. It is full of minerals (lots of iron and copper). <3 <3 <3 -

Re: sugar
Fri, August 31, 2007 - 7:29 AMKatrina, here is a recipe for absolutely wonderful chocolate ice-cream..all raw, dairy free and a power packed superfood:
Take a few frozen bananas, put in a food processor, add *raw* cacao powder (a superfood) to taste (you can find on the net) and raw* honey to taste (another superfood)..I also add a pinch of salt and other kinds of frozen berries (strawberries/rasberries). It is unbelievably good...very stimulating though so don't eat at bedtime!!
I have found decadent raw treats to fill almost every craving.

Re: sugar
Thu, October 11, 2007 - 6:48 PMHave you charted or kept a food journal to see if there's commonality when you have cravings?
I crave sugar when I'm hormonal. Also when I did a cleanse, I noticed my cravings dropped.
