Re: magic ingredients for green smoothies
Sat, February 2, 2008 - 9:05 AMI looooove spinach smoothies! My favorite so far is 1 pear + spinach + mint leaves + water. Yum! I never thought I would crave vegetables! But now I do. What is kale like in smoothies - does it have a strong taste or blend into what you're mixing it with, like spinach? Mmm....where do you get rosewater? And are the goji berries dried? Yum! Thanks for the ideas. :-)) Now, off to blend... -

Re: magic ingredients for green smoothies
Sat, February 2, 2008 - 1:14 PMRosewater is available from ethnic food vendors and I bet it is available at health food stores too.
I plump up dried gogi berries in water, often flavored with a splash of rosewater.
These are wonderful on oatmeal too.
I like to make oatmeal desserts that are served cold.
Maybe add chopped soaked organic hazelnuts.
Whole foods in our town has really great hazelnuts.
They look a little like almonds.

Re: magic ingredients for green smoothies
Sat, February 2, 2008 - 1:18 PMForgot to mention that kale is the sweetest green you can blend.
I prefer Dino and red russian after that.
Someone warned me against blending raw spinach because of some
constituant in it needs to be cooked or is toxic.
I will look forward to trying your pear/spinach combo anyway.
Sounds great. Thanks -

Re: magic ingredients for green smoothies
Mon, February 4, 2008 - 3:31 PMit may even have been here that someone suggested spinach + strawberries. i add oatmilk (or almond or hazelnut, tend to avoid the soy) along with vitamineralgreeen powder. you pretty much don't taste the spinach. regarding toxic ingred in spinach, it contains oxalic acid (do does kale, from what i understand, collards do not). the prob with oxalic acid is that i'm fairly sure it binds up calcium, meaning you may not get all the calcium from the spinach you're eating...... here's the wiki: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxalic_acid -

Re: magic ingredients for green smoothies
Tue, February 5, 2008 - 11:01 PMif you've ever had kidney stones, you shouldnt eat spinach or other similar greens raw because of the oxalates. a lot of people who haven't had kidney stones yet will (1 of 10!) and i must say- avoid avoid avoid!!! so painful...
a great green for smoothies is spirulina. sometimes i use (untoasted and unsalted) soaked nori or laver also- kinda tasty, but i prefer spirulina.
also for yum factor- hibiscus is wonderful, blends well when ground and makes pretty colors.

Re: magic ingredients for green smoothies
Wed, February 6, 2008 - 8:39 AMOkay, I'm getting a little confused. You all have wonderful ideas and suggestions and recommendations. I def agree that kidney stones should be avoided whenever possible (I've not had them but have friends who have) and there's A LOT that I don't know about yet that I'd love to learn. But eating raw spinach should be avoided...? And how is eating raw eggs good for you? I think I have pretty good taste and appreciation for food...and I love eggs and think they're good for you, but I'm partial to the 'when they're cooked' part. Hence that defeats the "raw" part of eating, but I guess I just want to get this spinach thing cleared up in my head - is it just bad in the sense that it promotes ks? Thanks all!! Don't get me wrong...I think you are all seriously awesome. :-D Thanks for the discussion...this is really awesome b/c I JUST got into green smoothies like a few weeks ago (making my own) and am now officially obsessed with them. -

Re: magic ingredients for green smoothies
Wed, February 6, 2008 - 1:38 PMJoyous green smooties everyone! May you experience bliss with everything they bring up in you.... heres to help deal with all the thoughts that are shared about differnt foods weather they are "good" "bad" for you or not. Thank the worries for coming up in your mind and be adement that you are choosing life now, which really exists outside of the mind, health comes from being in the moment and all raw foods are great for you(barring karmic food patterns-often coming through as allergies). Of course, eberything in moderation, and listening to your body(not your head) helps allot. Satisfy all of your urges, in moderation, and you'll be happy. Satifying those cravings conciously, will evolve you and nurture you, doing anything because its "supposed to be good for you" won't help, having an emotional experience that leads to a cognition that a food will be good for you is an amazing experience.

Re: magic ingredients for green smoothies
Wed, February 6, 2008 - 6:54 PMeggs, and especially raw eggs aren't for everyone. i started eating them in japan, where it was commonplace, and found that i liked the taste and that eating the egg early in the day gave me more sustained energy. i've eaten completely vegan before and found that i felt listless and cloudy, and the boost of protein i get from eggs is important for me.
in this country, i wouldnt suggest eating factory farmed eggs raw, though, as theyre sure to contain anti-biotics and more likely to contain bacteria.. i'm fortunate enough to live close to lots of farms where i can get fresh eggs. i definitely suggest doing your own research before you eat anything you feel iffy about.

Re: magic ingredients for green smoothies
Wed, February 6, 2008 - 10:43 PMalso the spinach/kidney stone thing... yeah... raw spinach and other greens (beet greens, dandelion greens, mustard greens and on) in their raw form are in the do-not-eat category for anyone prone to kidney stones. the calcium oxalates can bind to other minerals and collect in the kidneys. there are a lot of things on that list- nuts, animal protein, blueberries, strawberries, tea, chocolate, rhubarb, and on.... so... you know, one does what one can. i had impacted kidney stones which required surgery, and blood sweat and tears to remove... so i do my best to never find myself in that place again. but most of the reccommendations are for prevention before it ever happens, not breaking them up once you have them... so i try to pass on the info in hopes that other people wont have to go through that particular form of torture. <3 -

Re: magic ingredients for green smoothies
Wed, February 13, 2008 - 2:33 PMAn aside regarding washing the blender...I use a hand held blender...I love it, and it fits right into a wide mouth mason jar, so you just blend it all up in the jar, and drink...usually a rinse in hot water immediately is enough for cleaning the apparatus, makes smoothies so much easier, and is fabulous for blended soups!
I have been loving a simple smoothie of coconut or almond milk(usually watered down) mixed with Perfect Food by food for life, and sweetened with liquid stevia-vanilla creme flavor, sometimes I will add a little raw cacao powder...one could add fruit to this, I do that for my kids, but I don't handle sugars well, including fruit...I use it as a snack, and sometimes as a meal replacement....Aura -
