What foods tend to make you break out? What would you recommend for a skin detox. I need something, but I also need to make sure I'm getting what I need due to 3 kids, a busy lifestyle and triathlon training.
Thanks!

Re: Where have you noticed your ACNE comes from?
Wed, April 4, 2007 - 10:53 AMThanks gliSTenz, I've heard that about apple cider vinegar before. Do you know how much I should be drinking for this effect? Anything to worry about, PH imbalances or anything else?
I really think chocolate has the same effect here. *sighs* A friend brought a bag of Pinneapple Lumps back from home, and OH MY LORD. That was also my boyfriends response when he noticed I had eaten the entire bag. (yes, I was ashamed)
Where would I get nettles from? Is it more of a specialty herb / tonic?

Re: Where have you noticed your ACNE comes from?
Wed, April 4, 2007 - 12:02 PMYou can have quite alot..but I suggest for a good cleanse to take 2 TBSP in water 3x a day and drink alot of water inbetween....if that feels too much just decrease...I usually add it to my drinking water each day...even my 5 yr old loves to have it in hers...
Make sure its organic and has the mother in it...some people find it to strong so you may want to try some natural sweetener in it...
As to washing face with it...a teaspoon in a small cup of water...and splash on as often as possible,I have found when my skin is sore and septic and has that itching sore feeling, within hours it has stopped and calmed down if I apply ACV afew times...
Nettles you can find wild in alot of places otherwise it will be at the health food shop....blessings

Re: Where have you noticed your ACNE comes from?
Tue, April 17, 2007 - 11:42 PMIt's best to use raw, unprocessed, unpasteurized ACV.
Another very useful and similar alternative is kombucha tea.

Re: Where have you noticed your ACNE comes from?
Wed, April 18, 2007 - 4:55 PMYep. Well you're talking to someone that suffers from oily skin and attending acne problems. The ACV and kombucha are intended as cleansers but they do something far more useful.
The bacteria/yeasts that create acne and other skin problems are, obviously, the bad kind that our bodies don't like. The cultures that produce ACV and kombucha are full of bacteria/yeasts that our bodies do like. So beyond the clarifying nature of the acetic acids in both tonics, they also come with large doses of bacteria/yeast. It's commonly discussed that this is good for the digestion because the large influx of good bacteria/yeast outnumbers and controls the bad population, but it also serves the skin in the same fashion. Consequently, the bacterial population of your skin won't decrease but you should experience less acne and a better balanced skin that will require gentler treatment than the usual prescribed and over the counter measures.
The raw veggies definitely help in the same way because you're not killing all the good enzymes/bacteria/yeast that come along for the ride.

Re: Where have you noticed your ACNE comes from?
Wed, May 2, 2007 - 8:37 PMIf I eat cheese or any dairy product I get acne. If I cut out dairy completely I rarely get it. Take calcium supplements to get the calcium you need. Take calcium with magnesium and vitamin D. They help the body absorb calcium. -

Re: Where have you noticed your ACNE comes from?
Fri, May 11, 2007 - 10:14 AMHey Katrina,
Plain and simple, acne comes from toxins. I've been using Braggs Organic Apple Cider Vinegar since last October. I'm using to balance my ph. I have noticed slight improvements in my overall health but nothing as far as cleaner skin. I recently discovered a new program that works and I know it's not a place for advertising but I really believe in the Isagenix program that cleanses the toxins from the body that's all natural. I'm using the program to remove the toxins that created my psoriasis back in 1995 and for better overall health. Sorry if you're offended by my suggesting this program but I am here to help others achieve better health so I feel it is my responsibility as a caring human to enlighten others. If you're interested in researching the program watch the 1st and 3rd videos on the isavideos link and read the athletes success stories at this website: stephenmiholick.isagenix.com

Are you selling anything? I guess that's the main question because Tribe promotes free exchange of information in the benefit of everyone no matter their financial status : ) It's a give a recieve freely environment. Not a "give and get" one. I'm not offended, just attempting to understand. Are you?

Re: Where have you noticed your ACNE comes from?
Sun, May 13, 2007 - 7:03 AMInformation is free. I just wish to share my experiences with others when I know of something that can help with the imbalances of life. I have spent the last 5 years searching for ways to help the human body, mind and soul become completely in balance. I've realized that balance begins with the physical vessel. Once that is in balance the rest follows suit. I know an herbalist in Escondido, Ca that cures everything from depression to auto-immune and cancer so I know at the cellular level what stress and impurities do to the body and mind and also how to heal that damage. I read about your desire to cleanse the skin so I'm sharing with you something that works at the cellular level. Your skin is a reflection of what's going on with the inside of the body. If that imbalance is healed then the skin is healed. I know a woman that just finished a 30 day Isagenix program and her skin cleared up. She's amazed with not only her weight loss but also the clear skin. These companies that run the planet have done their best to put toxins in our bodies with everything from our soaps and shampoos to our food and water and air. They've done this to us so we become sick and have to take meds and we don't come to self realization and 'see' the truth then it's much easier to control us. It's these toxins and stress that are creating our imbalances. It is my duty as a spiritual being to share a path to health and wellness once I've discovered it.
Thank you for sharing with me
Many Blessings

Re: Where have you noticed your ACNE comes from?
Mon, May 28, 2007 - 6:18 PMYou can also get acne from hormonal imbalances..... I suggest IC3 or Indole 3 carbinol....It comes from crucrferious vegetables like broccoli and can help to balance out your hormones...it works especially well for women. A good brand is IC3 Supreme from "Now".... Taking Indole 3 carbinol has reduced my breakouts by %50 or more.
I normally break out when I eat a lot of grease and suger......fried egg sandwhiches and Raspberry Chocolate Ice cream....mmmmm.... ..Nah, suger pleasure is fleeting acne is forever....kind of....

Re: Where have you noticed your ACNE comes from?
Tue, June 5, 2007 - 9:03 PMActually, you both might be correct. Acne is usually a result of Staphylococcus bacterial infection as a result of immune system or hormonal imbalance. I suppose toxins can result in either of the latter conditions. However, the majority of the time it's an indication of immune system deficiency, which can be a result of lack of sleep, stress, vitamin deficiency, allergies, and many other problems unrelated to toxins.

Re: Where have you noticed your ACNE comes from?
Sat, November 3, 2007 - 10:54 PMThe product you are recommending, ISAGENIX, is endorsed by Alexander Haig, a Member of the Knights of Malta and a Corporate Fascist CEO. These people, geneally speaking are supporters of the pharmaceutical monopolies that in a nutshell do far mroe harm than good. The ad does not explain anything but rather uses fear tactic to promote it's concoction. I don't know about others here, but I would run from the stuff.
Every commercial you see on television and magazine ads and internet videos used for ads are fake. These people are paid well or they are actors making a few bucks. I live in LA and have seen how it works. The problem I realize is how else to know? Muscle testing is an excellent method that most people do not understand or believe in, but it's best if yor own body tells you what's best BEFORE you ingest anything, including food.

Fri, June 8, 2007 - 8:43 PMChocolate- Chocolate- Chocolate- and Chocolate....
hahahaha- and don't try to tell me "you have to eat raw cacao" bullshit either- cuz that is what i was eating ;)
as soon as I stopped eating chocolate, my long battle with acne stopped. I have noticed a handful of raw foodies (that eat raw cacao like i did) have acne and I bet it is the source- or the myco toxins in it- or whatever, but DAMN IT (!) it was the chocolate!
-and basically, I would trade in clear skin for chocolate any day! :)

Re: Where have you noticed your ACNE comes from?
Fri, October 19, 2007 - 6:36 AMI've found drinking the juice of 1-2 lemons in water each day helps, often makes it worse for a couple of days but after this is improved, something to do with the fruit acids being expelled through the skin i believe.
The juice can also be put neat onto skin overnight, stings a bit but its antibacterial effect is strong, if you dont mind waking up with a sticky shiny face that is!

Re: Where have you noticed your ACNE comes from?
Fri, November 16, 2007 - 4:33 PMhi katrina, i know that you have gotten alot of wonderful and helpful suggestions, but i just wanted to add a little more. first, i have found that overcleansing (especially if your skin is oily) can be harmful, it can wipe away the important oil that your skin needs so just a simple routine is good. maybe just finding a simple, non-soap, cleanser or gentle scrub, you can even make your own with a little clay and some ground oats, almonds and herbs such as chamomile and lavender and nettles (this can also double as a mask once a week if you want). then a simple spray of rose water is nice as a toner and if you have to use moisturizer use a dab of quality olive oil or grapeseed oil which is lighter. secondly, i have found burdock root or dandelion root to be very helpful for problem skin because the not only cleanse the blood but also cleanse the liver and help it to properly eliminate toxins from the body (which is one of the primary functions of the liver). sometimes it is good to work with the liver because alot of skin conditions stem from liver stagnation or the liver not being able to properly function for some reason or another. anyway, whatever you are trying i hope that it works for you!

Re: Where have you noticed your ACNE comes from?
Sun, November 18, 2007 - 4:58 PMI had acne starting my junior year in High School-----through my thirties. Nothing major, but enough so going without makeup wasn't pretty. When I hit 40 I began a very strict diet for health reasons. Basically macrobiotic, then later I switched to Ayurveda. My face seldom breaks out now and I never wear base, plus I often get compliments on my skin.
One thing however, that will cause my face to break out, even if I'm eating otherwise healthy is when I indulge in too many salty foods. Every once in a while I'll eat salty chips, nuts or popcorn---when I do I get bitzy and my face will break out.
Acne is caused when pitta is out of whack, you might check the ayuredic diet recomendations for Pitta. -

Re: Where have you noticed your ACNE comes from?
Mon, November 19, 2007 - 7:13 PMI'd also like to add, that I don't know about ya'll but I grew up watching my mom picking at her face and popping zits in the bathroom mirror, and I def. picked up the habit. I find when I just leave my face alone and stop touching it, picking it, worrying it, whathaveyou, my face chills out. My face was rather like a warzone for a while, but it eventually cleared up. Nothing like going about your day with a whopping red zit on your cheek. Builds character! Ironically enough, I usually find that when I let myself get carried away with thoughts about impressing some guy or looking really cute for some big event, I'll get a huge zit a day or two before - like the universe trying to tell me check yoself sister! Although it might be b/c I let myself get stressed out, who knows?
A wash once a day with a bar of Dr. Bronner's tea tree oil soap seems to be doing the trick for me. Sometimes I skip a day, especially in the winter when it's drier. In the summer I find I need to wash daily as my face tends to get greasier. When I was a runner I always had great skin b/c I sweated out crap that would otherwise be chillin in my pores. I swore off washing my face with any soap at all for several years, and after an initial freak out period my face seemed happy with that as well, although I did find that especially in the summer I would break out more, even if I rinsed my face with water each night. Hormones are also def. a factor for me - bleeding time usually means my face is on the verge of a break out. If I leave it alone, it usually doesn't come to the surface, and disappears overnight. -

Tue, November 20, 2007 - 6:46 PMheyyyy... i dunno, maybe this is silly- but for me, i find when i break out, its cus i havent changed my pillowcases in awhile! usually doing the laundry does the trick for me. haha, i know, i sound like a gross hygenically-challenged individual, but i just wanted to mention it. i dont eat sugar, fried things, wheat, meat, dairy... for me, i've always been more sensitive to environmental factors, moving between different cities and states usually causes or calms breakouts. -

Re: Where have you noticed your ACNE comes from?
Fri, February 8, 2008 - 7:38 PMI agree with the comment that acne come from hormone imbalances and bacteria. I have always had a problem with mild acne UNTIL I had a tubal ligation. Ever since the procedure I have had a clear face. Testosterone is the culprit...and some of us are more testosterone sensitive than others.

Re: Where have you noticed your ACNE comes from?
Fri, February 15, 2008 - 2:46 PMdirty pillowcases are my worst enemy.
ive swapped out my old cotton ones to organic cotton and my face has been much better off. bamboo is also a good switch too.

Re: Where have you noticed your ACNE comes from?
Sat, February 16, 2008 - 2:19 PMI've found that foods high in antioxidants also help in making the skin clearer, as well as providing other health benefits. Blueberries, cranberries, and a variety of fruits provide a good amount of antioxidants. -
-
Re: Where have you noticed your ACNE comes from?
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 9:59 PMgood point about the pillowcases. I get lazy about changing mine, and there's no reason for it since i have a whole bunch of them.
i am assuming that sugar is the culprit in my acne, but i am reluctantly considering the chocolate suggestion. It's hard for me to tell when most of the sugar i eat has chocolate involved somehow. I eat raw cacao a few times a week, but that doesn't stop me from eating other forms of chocolate. My skin is horrible right now, and i had ice cream the other day. -

Re: Where have you noticed your ACNE comes from?
Today, 11:10 AMAny kind of dairy will make me break out massively AND screws up my stomach really badly. I don't use dairy products anymore, the problem is, is that I like butter on my bread. So I have substituted that with soybutter. No breakouts.
As for cleaning up your skin: Just do what you always do, wash it with a non-soap facial wash in the shower. If it is all really bad, don't use too much facial scrub, until your face is ready for it. After you've dried off your face, you apply organic lemon juice, except for the areas around your eyes. The reason you have acne is that your facial skin is too alkaline (dairy will do that for you, amongst other things). A healthy facial skin is acidic, hence the lemon juice. At first it will burn and sting, if it is too much to handle, rince it off. After a couple of days your skin will have become more acidic and then you don't rince the lemon juice off anymore. This will be your skintoner too! Now your skin can handle makeup without freaking out! Your skin will look amazingly healthy.
I can speak from experience. My skin has always been really bad. The pimples and blackheads I had were big and gross, in large quantities (especially around my chin and mouth) and when I tried to get rid of them, they wouldn't come out! In december I started doing the above drill and now I don't even use the lemon juice anymore, not eating dairy is enough. My skin is still oily, but my powder will take care of that, oily doesn't have to mean pimply! Every once in a while I will have a small break out, due to my period or eating dairy without my knowing it, but now they are SO easy to get rid of! I can recommend this to anyone with acne.
Good luck!
